Ant Communities Resist Even in Small and Isolated Gypsum Habitat Remnants in a Mediterranean Agroecosystem

چکیده
Natural and seminatural habitat remnants play a crucial ecological role in intensified agroecosystems. Assumptions on the conservation value of small poorly connected fragments hostile matrix come from generalization obtained limited number taxa, mostly plants, vertebrates. To date, few studies have analyzed effect fragmentation ant communities Mediterranean agroecosystems, despite importance this group animals several key ecosystem functions services. Here, we analyze effects fragment area connectivity gypsum outcrops large cereal agroecosystem Central Spain. Ant were described by their species composition, abundance (total occurrences), species, standardized both (species density), richness). Observed was relatively high comparison with other Mediterranean, found no characteristics density, richness which implies that even isolated patches do for conservation. Moreover, total occurrences higher smaller more fragments. This finding contrasts results reported taxa similar habitats suggests certain traits strategies make them particularly resistant to capable take advantage patches. Given important played ants, recommend preservation these management plans agroecosystems drylands, especially those cases intensification agricultural practices greatly diminish natural availability.

Dominance in a ground‐dwelling ant community of banana agroecosystem
In tropical ecosystems, ants represent a substantial portion of the animal biomass and contribute to various ecosystem services, including pest regulation and pollination. Dominant ant species are known to determine the structure of ant communities by interfering in the foraging of other ant species. Using bait and pitfall trapping experiments, we performed a pattern analysis at a fine spatial ...

Earthworm communities along a forest-coffee agroecosystem gradient: preliminary evidence supporting the habitat-dependent feeding hypothesis
Earthworms often constitute an important component of agricultural foodwebs. As such, knowledge of their feeding preferences is relevant to the sustainable management of carbon and nutrient cycling in agroecosystems. We used natural abundances of stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) in earthworms and two of their putative food sources soil and leaf litter to test hypotheses regarding the feeding pla...
